Killer Uncertainty

November 24th, 2008 by jenniemarlow

Uncertainty is surely a killer. It’s target? Our enjoyment of life. It’s no secret that our experience of flow comes from our enthusiasm for what we are engaged in doing. However, it may not be as obvious that our enthusiasm can only be experienced in the now moment. When our fears prompt us to leave the present and venture into the regrets about the past or our fears about the outcomes the future might hold, we have entered the most hostile territory of all, the voracious joy-killer we call the Mind. Spotted Eagle has an antidote. It is to return our attention to the now moment, and to identify there the precise uncertainties that are causing us to be afraid. Once we have identified what frightens us about the uncertain future, we have an opportunity to approach uncertainty with a much more realistic and holistic attitude. We can ask ourselves this fundamental question: “Just for today, just for this moment, am I willing to allow this specific uncertainty to be a part of my reality?” Accepting uncertainty means that we are including in our reality all of the unmanifested potential that uncertainty implies. Okay, some of that potential doesn’t exactly make our hearts sing, but if we are objective, realistic, and employing consciousness, we can clearly see that most of the things we worry about never actually happen. And we have survived all of the unpleasant things that have happened to us thus far. Perhaps an even deeper inquiry is one that engages us with this question: “How can we thrive during times of great change?” Biological evolution provides one set of solutions. Biological evolution triggered by dramatic, sudden change in environment. When this happens, enormous changes occur in the type and distribution of resources. Survival of species depends upon their ability to adapt to changing conditions; their flexibility and responsiveness to change; finding new resource niches; and their degree of efficiency and resourcefulness. Spotted Eagle tells us that we need to attention these very simple truths about evolution if we are to thrive personally and financially. The more of our time and energy we devote to constructing catastrophic scenarios to fear, and the more we invest in shame, blame, guilt, outrage, pity and self-pity, the less likely it is that we will have any energy left to invest in an exploration of what is unknown, uncharted, and unforeseen that can serve us and our fellows, and that can offer us great potential to be rewarded for this service.
