Resistance is Futile

The trigger event has commenced. The emotions rise volcanically. (Or they get stuffed so far down, there is no apparent reaction at all, at least not at first.) Our fears or our excitement are over-stimulated. What now? How do we handle being triggered in a way that allows us to grow and evolve? Spotted Eagle teaches that the only way to evolve fear- and fantasy-based thinking is to bring yourself back to the now and observe what the mind is up to. What is it saying? What is it pressuring us to do? What is it predicting will happen? This practice of observing the mind requires discipline. We don’t try to control what the mind thinks. Instead, we try to get just enough distance from our emotional reaction to observe it, to witness the pattern in our thinking, to notice the distortions of fear and fantasy, and to let time do its job in allowing the emotional wave to conclude. Allowing our emotional wave to conclude is what dissipates the excited or negative emotional charge, and clarifies our choices. If we can manage not to act out our fear and fantasy during a trigger event, there is a deep inner confidence that begins to build with each succeeding event that we manage to navigate with consciousness. If we can understand that our excitement is simply the mind’s prediction that our fantasy will come true, we can make more sustainable choices that are based on what is real instead of what excites us. If we see the distortions of fear in the pattern of our thinking, we can reclaim power and make authentic choices, the choices we would make if we were not afraid of rejection, abandonment and safety, or domination.
